Operative Experience
Experience with gastrointestinal malignancies is quite large, with graduates of the program feeling proficient in the surgery of gastric, pancreatic, and colo-rectal cancers. The activity and interest of the staff in pancreatic tumors has made our residents unusually adept in the performance of the demanding resections needed for these conditions. By the time of a typical resident's graduation from the program, he/she has had the opportunity to perform several pancreatectomies and Whipple procedures.

The Breast Service is also very active, and involves residents in all phases of treatment. Karen Karsif, MD, together with Kenneth Rifkind, M.D., Suslan Lee, M.D. and other active breast surgeons, instruct residents in the evaluation of breast lumps and abnormal mammographic findings using the latest techniques of tumor localization and biopsy. Residents gain a large experience in breast-conserving resectional procedures as well as in mastectomy and the more extensive surgeries required for advanced disease. Residents responsible for the care of these patients also have opportunity to participate with reconstructive surgeons in the performance of operations ranging from implant placement to autologous tissue methods and microvascular free tissue transfer.

The multidisciplinary approach required in surgical oncology provides our residents a model for treatment of many other diseases. Also, oncologic treatment makes clear to training surgeons the effects that treatment choices have upon issues of function and quality of life for the patient. In no other field of medicine is that patient's participation in the treatment decision process more important.

Vascular
Our staff of vascular surgeons provides a full menu of experience to the surgical residents at NYHQ. By the completion of his/her residency each doctor has developed experience in:
- Abdominal aortic aneurysms
- Carotid artery surgery
- Distal lower extremity bypass
- Vascular Access

Residents also participate in the most complex of interventions, including the treatment of thoraco-abdominal aneurysms.

A complete education in any specialty involves the development of a full understanding of ancillary techniques and treatment alternatives. At NYHQ, vascular surgeons work in concert with interventional radiologists who employ cutting-edge endovascular procedures. Residents are exposed to angioscopy and the placement of endoluminal grafts while learning to work together with radiology colleagues in the development of unique, treatment protocols
