Overview
The Genetic Counseling program at the Breast Center at New York Hospital Queens provides services to individuals and family members who may be at higher risk for hereditary cancer syndromes. An initial consultation will help determine the likelihood of a hereditary cancer syndrome in the family and provide an opportunity to learn about the benefits and limitations of genetic testing. In some cases testing can be done the same day as the initial consultation. For those interested in testing, the genetic counselor will obtain insurance authorization and coordinate the genetic testing. In a follow-up visit, the genetic counselor will interpret the test results, discuss a medical management plan for early detection and risk reduction, and identify other family members who might benefit from genetic counseling and possibly testing. To determine if genetic counseling may be appropriate for you, please read on or consult your physician.
