Genetic Testing

Testing Options:
Once the genetic counselor has reviewed your medical and family history, the most appropriate test can be determined.   Different characteristics of the family history such as the types of cancer and ancestry of the individual will help determine which gene and what type of test to consider.   Your genetic counselor will explain the testing options to you and discuss the risks, benefits, and limitations of the testing before you make your decision.

Possible Test Results:
Positive Result
•  Negative Result
•  Uncertain Variant

* The genetic test results must be interpreted in the context of the medical and family history information available.   The genetic counselor will thoroughly discuss the meaning of the test result for you and for family members as well as what the next steps are.

Insurance Coverage
Insurance coverage of the testing can be determined prior to the testing being done so that you are aware of what, if any, out of pocket costs would be due to you.   Today many insurance companies cover 80-100% of the cost of testing if someone meets their criteria for testing, though some only cover a small amount of the cost.
