Medical Management Options/Cancer Detection and Risk Reduction Options
Increased Surveillance
* More frequent screening to detect cancer early

Monthly breast self-exams starting age 18-21 |

Once or twice yearly clinical breast exams starting age 25-35 |

Annual mammograms starting 10 years prior to the earliest diagnosis of breast cancer in the family or at age 40 |

Annual Breast MRI may be prove to be a useful screening tool |

| Ovary: |

Once or twice yearly pelvic exams with transvaginal ultrasound and a CA-125 blood test starting age 25-35 |
Chemoprevention
* Use of prescription drugs to reduce the chance of cancer developing (It is important to note that there are side effects to these medications and individuals should discuss the pros and cons of taking the drugs with their physicians)
Breast: Tamoxifen
Ovary: Oral Contraceptives Prophylactic Surgery
* Surgery to remove the breasts and/or ovaries before cancer develops (It is important to note that these surgeries reduce but do not eliminate the chance for cancer to develop)
Breast: Prophylactic Mastectomy, surgical removal of the breast(s)
Ovary: Prophylactic Oophorectomy, surgical removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes
