Head and Neck
Director: Jerry Huo, M.D.
The Division of Head and Neck Surgery at NYHQ is staffed and equipped to provide a broad range of services to the greater New York population. Patients with surgical conditions of the thyroid, parathyroid, oral cavity, throat, jaws and larynx come from throughout Queens and Long Island to take advantage of our many resources and our talented staff.
Members of the Division are known for their general expertise in the Head and Neck, and have a particularly large experience in surgery of the thyroid and parathyroid glands. Clinical research in the identification and treatment of early disease in these organs has led to articles of importance in multiple peer-reviewed medical journals.
Ablative surgery for cancers of the oral cavity, sinuses and pharynx are performed regularly and the most complex reconstructive techniques are employed in their repair. As with all cancers treated at NYHQ, a multidisciplinary approach is used in the treatment of these difficult problems, with staff from medical and radiation oncology as well as speech therapy being involved in work-up, treatment planning and rehabilitation of our patients. The Division's considerable experience with modern techniques in laser and endoscopic therapies makes successful organ preservation possible in many cases.
Future prospects for the Division include the development of a dedicated hospital unit for management of Head and Neck surgical patients. Within such a facility, specialized organization and instrumentation will allow specialty nurses, surgeons, and therapists to see to the comfort and extraordinary needs of patients with oropharyngeal cancers.
Through journal articles, book chapters, and presentations at national and international society meetings, members of the division share their clinical experience with others in the Head and Neck specialty. Division members have also taken leadership positions in both local and national Head and Neck societies.
